What to Expect When You Hire an Interior Designer
June 10, 2024
If you've never worked with an interior designer before, the process can feel mysterious — maybe even intimidating. What do they actually do? How much will it cost? Will they listen to what I want, or impose their own taste? These are valid questions, and they deserve honest answers.
At Driftwood Studio, we believe the design process should feel collaborative, clear, and even enjoyable. Here's what it actually looks like, step by step.
Step 1: The Discovery Conversation
Everything starts with a conversation — not a sales pitch. We want to understand how you live, what frustrates you about your current space, what you're drawn to aesthetically, and what your goals are for the project. This is usually a 60-to-90-minute meeting, either in your home or virtually. There's no commitment required. It's simply about seeing if we're a good fit for each other.
Step 2: The Design Concept
If we decide to work together, the next step is developing a design concept. This includes mood boards, material selections, color palettes, and preliminary furniture layouts. We present this as a visual story so you can see and feel the direction before any purchasing decisions are made. This is where the magic starts to happen — and where your input is most valuable.
Step 3: Detailed Design and Sourcing
Once the concept is approved, we move into detailed design. This means specifying every item — furniture, lighting, hardware, tile, paint colors, window treatments, accessories. We source from a mix of trade-only vendors and curated retail sources, always prioritizing quality, durability, and timeless appeal. You'll see and approve everything before it's ordered.
Step 4: Implementation
This is where the design comes to life. We coordinate deliveries, manage installations, work with contractors and tradespeople, and handle all the logistics so you don't have to. We're on-site for key moments — furniture placement, art hanging, final styling — to make sure every detail is right.
Step 5: The Reveal
The best part. Walking into your completed space for the first time and feeling that it's unmistakably yours — but elevated in ways you might not have imagined. This is what we live for.
What About Cost?
Interior design pricing varies widely, and transparency matters. At Driftwood Studio, we offer several service tiers — from one-time consultations to full-service design — so there's an option for different budgets and project scopes. We're always upfront about fees and help you establish a realistic budget for furnishings and materials before any commitments are made.
The Bottom Line
Hiring an interior designer isn't about handing over control. It's about gaining a partner who brings expertise, resources, and a trained eye to help you create a home that truly works for your life. If you've been thinking about it, the first step is simply a conversation.
