Bathroom Retreats: Designing Your Daily Escape
March 22, 2026
Of all the rooms in a home, the bathroom has the greatest potential for transformation. It's where you start and end every day. It's the one room where you're alone with your thoughts. And yet, in most homes, it's treated as purely functional — a room to get in and out of as quickly as possible. What if it could be something more?
The Spa Mindset
The best bathroom designs borrow from the spa experience: natural materials, warm lighting, clean lines, and a sense of calm. But unlike a spa, your bathroom needs to function for daily life — storage for products, easy-to-clean surfaces, good ventilation, and practical layout. The art is achieving both.
Material Choices That Matter
In a bathroom, materials do double duty — they need to be beautiful and waterproof. Our go-to combination is honed natural limestone for walls and floors (warm, slip-resistant, and forgiving of water spots), a weathered oak vanity (sealed for moisture resistance but retaining its natural warmth), and unlacquered brass fixtures (which develop a gorgeous patina in humid environments).
For shower surrounds, handmade zellige tile in warm white creates a surface that's both waterproof and visually rich. The slight irregularity of each tile catches light beautifully and gives the space a handcrafted quality that mass-produced tile simply cannot match.
The Freestanding Tub
If your bathroom has the space, a freestanding soaking tub is the single most transformative element you can add. Positioned near a window with sheer linen curtains, it becomes the centerpiece of a room that invites you to slow down. We favor simple, sculptural shapes in matte white — they're timeless, easy to clean, and beautiful from every angle.
Lighting for Mood
Bathroom lighting should be layered, just like any other room. Bright, even task lighting at the vanity for grooming. Warm, ambient lighting — wall sconces in aged brass, a small pendant, or even candles — for bathing and relaxation. A dimmer switch is non-negotiable. The ability to shift from bright morning light to soft evening glow transforms the bathroom experience.
The Details That Elevate
A reclaimed wood bath tray holding a candle and a book. Plush Turkish cotton towels in warm cream, rolled and displayed on open shelving. A small piece of driftwood or a ceramic vessel with dried eucalyptus. A woven basket for extra linens. These small details are what transform a bathroom from functional to retreat-like. They cost very little but change everything about how the room feels.
Your Daily Ritual
Ultimately, a well-designed bathroom isn't about luxury for luxury's sake. It's about honoring the daily rituals that bookend your day. When your morning routine happens in a beautiful space, the day starts differently. When your evening wind-down happens surrounded by warm materials and soft light, you sleep better. That's not indulgence — that's good design.
