Small Changes, Big Impact: Weekend Design Updates
August 5, 2024
Not every design transformation requires a contractor, a six-month timeline, and a five-figure budget. Some of the most impactful changes you can make to your home take a single weekend and a thoughtful eye. Here are our favorites.
Swap Your Throw Pillows and Blankets
This sounds simple because it is — but the impact is real. If your living room feels flat, the fix might be as easy as replacing your throw pillows with ones in a different texture. Trade out polyester for Belgian linen or chunky knit. Add a cashmere throw in warm taupe. These small textile changes add layers of warmth and visual interest that completely shift the feel of a room.
Replace Your Hardware
Cabinet pulls, drawer knobs, and even light switch plates are the jewelry of a room. Swapping builder-grade brushed nickel for unlacquered brass or matte black hardware takes an afternoon and costs a fraction of a renovation — but it makes your kitchen or bathroom feel custom. This is one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost changes you can make.
Add Living Greenery
A single large plant in the right corner can transform a room. Greenery brings life, color, and organic shape to spaces that feel static. Place it in a woven basket or aged terracotta planter, add a brass uplight behind it, and suddenly that empty corner becomes a focal point.
Upgrade Your Lighting
If you're still living with builder-grade flush-mount ceiling lights, this is your sign to change them. A woven rattan pendant, an aged brass sconce, or a sculptural table lamp does more for a room's atmosphere than almost any other single change. Warm-toned bulbs (2700K) are essential — they make everything look better.
Style Your Surfaces
The difference between a cluttered surface and a styled one is intention. Clear your coffee table, console, or nightstand completely. Then add back three to five items with purpose: a stack of books, a ceramic vessel, a small piece of driftwood, a candle. Group items in odd numbers. Vary heights. Leave breathing room. That's it.
The Designer's Secret
The common thread in all of these updates is the same principle that guides full-scale interior design: intention. Every object, every material, every texture should earn its place. When you approach even small changes with that mindset, the results feel professional — because they are.
