Outdoor Living in Florida: Extending Your Interior

September 10, 2025

In most of the country, outdoor living is seasonal. In Florida, it's year-round — and that changes everything about how we should approach outdoor design. Your lanai, patio, or covered porch isn't a secondary space. It's an extension of your home that deserves the same design intention as your living room.

Treat It Like an Interior Room

The biggest mistake we see in Florida outdoor spaces is treating them as afterthoughts — a couple of plastic chairs, a basic grill, and maybe a string of lights. But when you think of your outdoor space as an actual room — with zones for seating, dining, and relaxation — the design possibilities expand dramatically.

At Driftwood Studio, we approach outdoor living with the same principles we use indoors: a cohesive material palette, intentional furniture placement, layered lighting, and curated accessories. The only difference is the materials need to withstand Florida's weather.

Materials That Work Outside

Teak is our go-to for outdoor furniture. It's naturally weather-resistant, develops a beautiful silver-gray patina over time, and has the warmth and quality of fine indoor furniture. We pair it with performance fabrics — outdoor linens and Sunbrella in warm neutrals — that look and feel like interior textiles but can handle rain, sun, and humidity.

For surfaces, we love natural stone pavers, stained concrete, and porcelain tile that mimics natural materials. Driftwood accent pieces work beautifully outdoors — they're already weathered, so Florida's elements only add to their character.

The Lighting Difference

Outdoor lighting transforms a space from usable-during-daylight to magical-at-night. We layer string lights on exposed beams or pergolas, landscape uplights in planters and greenery, and candlelight on dining and coffee tables. The goal is warm, ambient light that makes the space feel intimate and inviting after sunset — which, in Florida, is when outdoor living really comes alive.

Creating Zones

A well-designed outdoor space has distinct zones, just like an open-concept interior. A seating area with a deep sofa and coffee table for conversation. A dining area with a table that seats your family and guests. A quiet corner with a lounge chair for reading. Each zone should feel connected but distinct, with area rugs, planters, or furniture arrangement defining the boundaries.

The Apollo Beach Advantage

Designing outdoor spaces in Apollo Beach comes with a unique advantage: water views. Whether your home overlooks the bay, a canal, or a community lake, the view becomes the focal point of your outdoor design. We orient furniture to frame the view, keep sight lines clear, and use the natural landscape as the backdrop for everything we place in the space.
