5 Materials That Age Beautifully in Florida Homes

April 22, 2024

Designing a home in Florida means reckoning with a climate that tests every material you choose. Humidity, salt air, intense UV light, and temperature swings can destroy the wrong materials in a matter of years. But the right materials? They don't just survive — they develop character.

At Driftwood Studio, we've built our entire material philosophy around this principle: choose materials that age gracefully. Here are the five we reach for most often.

1. Honed Natural Stone

Honed limestone and marble (as opposed to polished) are ideal for Florida homes. The matte finish hides water spots and etching far better than polished surfaces, and the natural variation in stone means small imperfections blend right in. Honed Calacatta marble on a kitchen island develops a soft patina over years of use that actually makes it more beautiful. Limestone floors in warm cream tones stay cool underfoot in summer and feel timeless in any setting.

2. Belgian Linen

Linen is the ultimate Florida fabric. It breathes in humidity, it's naturally antimicrobial, and it gets softer with every wash. We use it for slipcovered sofas, curtains, bedding, and upholstered dining chairs. The key is embracing the wrinkle — that relaxed, lived-in look is part of linen's charm. A Belgian linen sofa in warm cream is the foundation of nearly every Driftwood Studio living room.

3. Reclaimed and Weathered Oak

Engineered white oak flooring and reclaimed oak furniture are built for Florida's humidity swings. Unlike solid hardwood, engineered oak won't expand and contract dramatically with moisture changes. And reclaimed oak — for dining tables, console tables, and shelving — already has the character that new wood takes decades to develop. The weathered gray tones of driftwood-finished oak are particularly beautiful in coastal settings.

4. Unlacquered Brass

We specify unlacquered brass for hardware, fixtures, and lighting throughout our projects. Unlike lacquered or plated finishes that chip and peel over time, unlacquered brass develops a warm, living patina. In Florida's humid climate, this patina develops beautifully — each piece becomes unique to its environment. Cabinet pulls, faucets, light fixtures, and curtain rods in unlacquered brass add warmth and character that only improves with age.

5. Handmade Zellige Tile

Zellige tiles — handmade Moroccan clay tiles with an irregular, slightly undulating surface — are perfect for Florida kitchens and bathrooms. Their variation in color and texture means they hide imperfections and water spots beautifully. The slight irregularity catches light in a way that mass-produced tile simply cannot. We love them in warm white or soft sage for backsplashes and shower surrounds.

The Common Thread

What these five materials share is honesty. They don't pretend to be something they're not. They show their age, and that age makes them more beautiful. In a climate as demanding as Florida's, that's not just an aesthetic choice — it's a practical one.
